LeBron James (LAL) is our Player of the Week for Week 16.
The Lakers entered the final week of the regular season missing Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique), with playoff seeding still on the line and the conversation around the team trending toward whether they could survive the postseason at all. James decided to answer the question himself, stepping back into the primary creator role he had handed off most of the year and going 3-0 to close the season.
It started in San Francisco. Without his two co-stars, James scored 12 in the opening quarter, finished with 26 points, 11 assists and 8 rebounds on 11-for-17 shooting, and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 119-103 win over Golden State. Two nights later, on the back end of a back-to-back at age 41, he posted 28 points and 12 assists in a 101-73 demolition of Phoenix that clinched home-court advantage in the first round. That second assist of the night also became the 12,000th of his career, making him only the fourth player in NBA history to reach the mark. Robert Horry summed up the league reaction on the post-game broadcast: still better than 95% of the floor.
The finale against Utah was a tune-up by design. James played the first half only, dropped 18 points and 6 assists in 17 minutes, and was rested for the second half as the Lakers cruised 131-107 to lock in the No. 4 seed. For the week he averaged 24 points, 9.7 assists and 3.0 steals on 56% shooting and 50% from three, the kind of efficiency line that has nothing to do with garbage-time inflation given how short his minutes were.
Los Angeles finishes the regular season at 53-29, fourth in the West, and opens the playoffs Saturday at home against Houston. Doncic and Reaves are not expected back for Game 1. On current form, that is a problem James seems prepared to absorb.
